Where the flowers bloom

our columnist Nikolas Feireiss
Discusses flower power

Gardens are very much en vogue – especially lush, wild gardens. Digging in the soil, sowing seeds and weeding slow down the pace of life, so they say. And these activities are grounding in the most literal sense. Designers have always drawn inspiration from poppies, roses and tulips. And no wonder because fashion is all about beauty and flowers impress any lover of aesthetics – whether aquilegia by the edge of a path or exotic orchids in the rainforest. Coco Chanel made the camellia her trademark. Christian Dior grew scented roses and jasmine at his La Colle Noire country estate in Normandy – in memory of the garden from his childhood. In the era of Dior, it was considered a compliment to compare women with beautiful flowers. This is mostly not so well tolerated these days! Nevertheless, flowers are a fixed part of fashion. Men too are literally blooming with floral patterns decorating their shirts, trousers and coats. A good sign. Because flower power is a symbol of peace. So it’s encouraging to see this celebrated by the fashion world.
